The second of two classic German children's films based on the popular novels by Enrich Kästner (1899-1974), which the Goethe-Institut are screening as part of ALF 2007. Kästner was one of Germany's most famous authors, noted especially for his progressive and perceptive children't literature.
Emil und die Detektive (Franziska Buch, Ger, 2001) is an engaging film which tells the story of Emil who lives with his father in a small town in eastern Germany (his mother has left to start a new life in Canada). When his father is involved in a car crash and ends up in hospital, Emil is sent to stay with his teacher's sister in Berlin. However, on the train, a stranger befriends him and robs him. When he arrives in Berlin, Emil enlists the help of a mixed bunch of street-savvy kids to help him track the perpetrator down.
For children over 8 years.
